What We Stand For
The Iberian orcas are frequently misunderstood, often portrayed as a danger to sailors. We work to correct these misconceptions and protect the orcas through patrolling, educating the public, and supporting sailors navigating orca-inhabited waters. Our goal is to promote a future where humans and orcas can peacefully coexist.
Iberian Orca Guardians
How it started
United by a Shared Passion for Marine Conservation
The Iberian Orca Guardians Foundation was founded by marine conservationist Sarah Connor and WeWhale’s Janek Andre in October 2024. Driven by their shared passion for the ocean and alarmed by the decline of Europe’s last Iberian Orcas, they united to take action. Witnessing firsthand the threats these orcas face in the Strait of Gibraltar, Sarah and Janek combined their expertise to create a dedicated organization. Their mission is to protect the fewer than 35 remaining Iberian Orcas through patrols, education, and community engagement, ensuring these majestic creatures have a sustainable future.
Get Involved & Make a Difference
Your support is essential to the survival of the Iberian orcas.
From donating and volunteering to spreading the word and being an ambassador, there are numerous ways you can make a meaningful impact in protecting the endangered Iberian orcas. These majestic animals, native to the waters surrounding Spain, Portugal, Morocco, and France are facing increasing threats due to habitat loss, human interference and illegal fishing. By supporting our cause, you contribute directly to the preservation of these orcas and their natural environment. Your donation helps fund vital patrols that safeguard their habitats, while volunteering or being an ambassador allows you to be on the frontlines of conservation efforts, whether through research, public outreach, or direct action.
Even simply raising awareness by sharing our message and educating others about the orcas’ plight can have a profound effect. Every action, no matter how big or small, plays a crucial role in ensuring that these magnificent creatures continue to thrive in the wild. Together, we can make a difference and help protect the Iberian orcas for future generations to enjoy.
Protecting the Iberian orcas in the Strait of Gibraltar
Our team regularly patrols the Strait of Gibraltar, a key habitat for Iberian orcas. This work is critical to preventing any danger to these animals as they are facing threats such as human retaliation and getting injured by illegal fishing activities. At the same time our patrol supports sailors to cross the Strait of Gibraltar to avoid interactions between the Orcas and sailors that could lead to any possible conflict.
